“D” Avenue Traffic Calming Roundabout & War Memorial

The City of National applied for and received two grants to construct a traffic calming roundabout in response to requests from residents to enhance safety at the intersection of “D” Avenue & E. 12th Street in National City, CA. Speeding and accidents were the primary concerns. The “D” Avenue corridor through this intersection serves as a key walking route to several area schools, a community park, Boys & Girls Club, and senior housing complex. The City’s Veterans Memorial, which is located at the southwest corner of this intersection, was vandalized while the project was in design. The City immediately formed a War Memorial Committee consisting of City staff, local veterans and service organization members to develop a plan to refurbish and enhance the War Memorial as part of the Roundabout project. To further honor our military and veterans, the roundabout was designed to include monuments with plaques of the five branches of the armed forces in the center circle and a patriotic-themed mural on both retaining walls implemented by local artists and volunteers from the Community. The “D” Avenue Traffic Calming Roundabout & War Memorial project has proven to be a jewel of the Community, something residents and veterans can take pride in. The roundabout has also enhanced safety for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians by reducing speeds from 40 mph to 20 mph, providing refuge islands for pedestrians to cross each leg, and installing signage and striping for bikes along each approach. To date there have been no injury accidents since project completion. See attached photos of the completed project.
