City of Santa Barbara Bridge Projects

The City is wrapping up construction of two critical bridge replacement projects in the Waterfront area of Santa Barbara. The two projects are the Cabrillo Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project and the Mason Street Bridge Replacement Project. The bridges are both over Mission Creek. The old Cabrillo Bridge was over a 100 years old and on a historic boulevard. The City, through its Historic Landmarks Commission, desired to replicate many historical aspects of the original bridge including replica barrier rails. The bridge itself was extremely structurally deficient and in need of immediate replacement. As Cabrillo Boulevard, is a primary arterial, it was critical to maintain access during construction and the bridge was built in three stages to maintain one lane of traffic during construction. The Mason Street Bridge replacement was primarily replaced due to geometric issues including flood conveyance and roadway widths. The bridge was designed to convey a 20-year storm event in conjunction with the Lower Mission Creek Flood Control Project.
