Replacement of Jalama Road Bridge (51C-017 Replacement)

The length of the new bridge needed to be 160 feet long to connect across the width of the canyon. The long span was gracefully solved by using the segmented beam girder design. The beams were trucked to the site in 60-foot segments and then spliced together and formed the second longest beam bridge in California. This concrete beam design is less expensive than single piece steel beams and requires less maintenance. The beams were trucked to the site in 60-foot segments and then spliced together and formed the second longest beam bridge in California. The resulting 118 ton beams were picked-up by a crane and placed at night because the road has to remain open during the day. All work was completed by February 12, 2016. The bridge is the longest single span bridge in Santa Barbara County and second longest single span spliced girder bridge in California.
