Newport Road Widening Project-City of Menifee

The Newport Road Widening Project’s overall purpose was to directly improve the safety, traffic flow, and overall quality of the main thoroughfare in the City of Menifee. With close to 65,000 vehicles currently traveling along Newport Road, and with the incoming Interstate 215/ Newport Road Interchange project beginning in 2015 that would further impede traffic, coupled with increasing population growth marked at increasing 30% in 6 years and Newport Road being one of only three ways to bifurcate to Interstate 215, improvements along Newport Road had to be drastic, quick, and innovative with the accompanied fiscal challenges that comes with being a new city. This project included (1) adding one traffic lane in each direction between Antelope and Menifee Roads; (2) adding a double left turn lane from westbound Newport Road to Southbound Antelope Road; (3) adding a new traffic signal at the intersection; (4) installed conduit between traffic signals to lay the groundwork for future signal coordination; (5) installation of median water wise landscaping for beautification; and (6) storm drain improvements. This project included a 4” PCC sidewalk, 8” PCC Curb and Gutter, 8” Median Curb, a commercial driveway, recycled asphalt, traffic signal interconnect, a bio-retention system including vegetation swales, new filtration system, and new ADA ramps. This safe and sustainable community improvements serve the safety and traffic transportation needs of residents, school children, and nearby businesses. The improvements also solve an important capacity and traffic congestion issue for the region, and also is a link for the Interstate/215 Newport Road Interchange project.
