Isla Vista Sidewalk Improvements Segovia Road, County of Santa Barbara, Department of Public Works

Introduction The purpose of this project is to provide safe and efficient sidewalks for students walking in Isla Vista. The new sidewalks comply with the American Disabilities Act (ADA). The project contains 90 CY of Class II road base, 1,880 SF of concrete flatwork, 1,450 SF concrete driveways, 1,130 SF of sidewalk and 91 SF of wood mulch. The cost of the project was $163,000. The County Public Works Department has been constructing an average of 1,200 linear feet of sidewalk annually for the past 15 years. Isla Vista is an unincorporated community in Santa Barbara County, California. As of the 2010 census, Isla Vista had a population of 23,096. The majority of residents are college students at the nearby University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB, located to the east of the community) or at Santa Barbara City College. There are 25 lane miles of roads in Isla Vista. Most of the lane miles of roads are aligned east-west and carry students from the University on the east, across Isla Vista. Since Isla Vista has not been annexed by either Goleta or Santa Barbara, the community remains unincorporated, and only county funds are available for civic projects.
