Project Description

The Bollinger Canyon Road Widening Project was constructed to improve safety and circulation on Bollinger Canyon Road between the I-680 Freeway and Market Place intersection in San Ramon. Bollinger Canyon Road is the City’s main arterial carrying traffic volumes as high as 60,000 vehicles per day. Prior to the implementation of this project there were substantial peak commute vehicle delay and vehicle driver complaints. This Project was completed ahead of time and within budget. The Project was completed in concert with the grand opening of the City Center – Bishop Ranch, a 300,000 square foot upscale retail center on Bollinger Canyon Road adjacent to the Project. Major accomplishments of the Bollinger Canyon Road Widening Project are as follows: • Improved traffic circulation to accommodate City Center impacts and the General Plan buildout • Addition of one travel lane in the eastbound direction from the I-680 Freeway to Market Place to add vehicle capacity and improve circulation • Extension of dual left turn lanes on eastbound Bollinger Canyon Road to northbound Sunset Drive and to northbound Camino Ramon to provide adequate vehicle storage capacity to prevent turning vehicles from stacking into the through lanes • Addition of a second left turn lane on westbound Bollinger Canyon Road into the Chevron campus to add vehicle capacity • Addition of a second left turn lane on westbound Bollinger Canyon Road to Bishop Ranch 1 to add vehicle capacity • Addition of an exclusive right turn lane on westbound Bollinger Canyon Road to northbound Camino Ramon to add vehicle capacity and allow vehicles turning right to bypass vehicles going straight • Addition of a second left turn lane on southbound Sunset Drive to eastbound Bollinger Canyon Road to add vehicle capacity • Installed new traffic signal poles and mast arms to align with the new lane configurations to provide clear direction to motorists • Improved existing corridor ITS adaptive traffic signal system by installing and repairing signal interconnect cabling and adding fiber optic connections to provide a more reliable communication infrastructure to facilitate monitoring the corridor to coordinate and adjust traffic signal timing to optimize vehicle flow • Installed accessible pedestrian signals and detectors at four intersections on the corridor to improve ADA access and serve the increased pedestrian usage • Various ADA and aesthetic improvements along the entire corridor • Installed new LED street lighting with longer mast arms for proper illumination of the wider street and new frames for hanging banners, etc. for seasonal events • Installed drought tolerant landscaping along the corridor which was evaluated and designed to allow proper line of site and converted landscape irrigation to recycled water Since these improvements have been installed, staff has noticed a substantial improvement in vehicle traffic flow and a decrease in traffic-related complaints within the improvement area.
