2018 Full Depth Recycle & Overlay Project

Granite Creek Road & Branciforte Drive

City or County Responsible for Project:

County of Santa Cruz

Award Category:

Roads: Efficient and Sustainable Road Maintenance, Construction and Reconstruction Projects.

Narrative Description Of Your Entry:

The pavement condition of the project roadway segments had degraded to a point where reconstruction of the roadway section was required. We chose to employ a full depth recycling process which pulverizes the existing pavement in place, mixes it with the underlying road base, adds cement and water and then regrades and recompacts the material to become a new strengthened road base. We were able to accomplish the work with no off-haul of materials required – all existing roadway material was re-used on site reducing truck trips required for the project, and thereby reducing emissions and wear on surrounding roadways. After the full depth recycle process we repaved these road sections with a 3” asphalt concrete overlay. This project completely rehabilitated 2.5 miles of County roadway on Granite Creek Road and Branciforte Drive. These reconstructed roadways will serve the needs of commuters, residents, and visitors for many years to come.
